El Profesor Néstor Escalona Burgos obtuvo su licenciatura en Química y título profesional de Químico en la Universidad de Santiago de Chile en 1997, y obtuvo su doctorado en Química en la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, en el año 2002. En el año 2003 y 2006 realizo una estadía postdoctoral en el “Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse et l'Environnement de Lyon”, Francia. Desde el 2004 hasta septiembre del 2015 fue profesor asociado en el Departamento de Fisicoquímica de la Facultad de Ciencias Químicas de la Universidad de Concepción. En el año 2013 fue profesor invitado en el “Chemical and Biological Engineering Department” de la “ University of Maine”, Estados Unidos. A contar de octubre del 2016 es Profesor Asociado del departamento de Ingeniera Química y Bioprocesos y de la Facultad de Química de la Pontificia Universidad católica de Chile (PUC).
Su investigación ha estado centrada en la descontaminación ambiental, producción de energía y síntesis de productos químicos mediante procesos catalíticos. Su área de especialización y los campos de interés incluye reacciones de hidrotratamiento de compuestos modelos y mezclas reales de petróleo, gasificación de biomasa, reformando de metano, procesos de adsorción para la descontaminantes en medio acuoso, reacción de Fischer Tropsch y mejoramiento catalítico del bio-oil y de moléculas modelos de los derivados de la biomasa. Actualmente, su investigación se centra en el concepto de “Bio-Refinería”, transformación de derivados de la biomasa en biocombustibles y productos químicos de alto valor agregado.
Actualmente el Dr. Escalona ha sido autor y co-autor en más de 120 artículos ISI y 130 presentaciones en congresos nacionales e internacionales y ha participado en más de 19 proyectos de investigación.
