Ignacio Vargas es Ingeniero Civil Ambiental de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Se licenció el año 2004 y recibió el grado de Doctor en Ciencias de la Ingeniería de la misma institución el año 2009. Durante los años 2010 y 2011 realizó un Postdoctorado en The Pennsylvania State Unversity (USA) desarrollando sistemas bioelectroquímicos o microbial fuel cells (MFCs) para producir energía a partir del metabolismo microbiano. Actualmente se desempeña como académico de jornada completa en el Departamento de Ingeniería Hidráulica y Ambiental de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile donde realiza docencia e investigación en el área de Ingeniería Ambiental. Sus temas de interés se vinculan con la bioenergía, microbiología ambiental, sistemas de tratamiento biológico de aguas residuales y RILes, biocorrosión y biogeoquímica.
