El profesor Sauma es ingeniero civil de industrias y magíster en Ciencias de la Ingeniería de la Universidad Católica y Master of Science y Ph.D. en Ingeniería Industrial e Investigación de Operaciones por la Universidad de California en Berkeley, Estados Unidos. Obtuvo la Beca Presidente de la República para realizar sus estudios de doctorado en el extranjero. Entre sus intereses se encuentra el diseño de mecanismos eficientes de mercado y el estudio de las estructuras de incentivos que operan dichos mercados, con un interés especial en su aplicación a los sectores de electricidad y medioambiente.
Ha publicado varios artículos en revistas especializadas y ha presentado sus trabajos en diversas conferencias internacionales. Además, realiza docencia a nivel de pre y postgrado en su área especialización.
Ha obtenido diversos premios, tanto nacionales como internacionales, en reconocimiento de su trabajo de investigación, tales como el "Best Publication in Energy award" entregado por The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) en Octubre de 2008 y el “Best Application Paper Award in the name of Professor B. G. Raghavendra” entregado en The International Conference on Operations Research Applications in Infrastructure Development (ICORAID), en 2005. Participa regularmente como referee para revistas internacionales, y en congresos especializados. Es integrante de diversas asociaciones académicas y profesionales.
El profesor Sauma actualmente lidera diversos proyectos de investigación en su área especialización.
