Profile

Dr. César Sáez Navarrete is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, School of Engineering, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC). He holds dual degrees in Chemical and Industrial Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from the University of Chile. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, specializing in soil bioremediation. He currently serves as Scientific Director of the UC Center for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials (CIEN UC) and as Director of the Renewable Energy and Waste Laboratory (LERR UC), where he leads strategic initiatives focused on waste valorization, clean energy, and sustainability.

He has served on the UC Ethics and Safety Committee, the Undergraduate Committee of the School of Engineering, and as Student Ombudsperson. He is a member of the Major in Innovation Committee and teaches in the Master’s Program in Energy Engineering (MIE-UC) as well as in the UC Energy Center. He has led over 25 R&D and innovation projects funded by agencies such as FONDEF, CORFO, FIC, FAE, and VRI, with a strong emphasis on technological and social impact. He founded the Biodegradability and Compostability Testing Area (DICTUC 31) and holds 12 patents—6 of them granted—in the fields of biomaterials, nanotechnology, and decarbonization processes.

He has supervised 94 civil engineering theses (including international students) and 56 master's and doctoral graduates. His scientific output includes over 100 publications, including peer-reviewed articles and books. He is recognized as a national reference in environmental issues and the energy transition, with frequent appearances in media outlets such as TVN, CHV, CNN, El Mercurio, La Tercera, and TV UNAM (Mexico). In 2025, he was awarded the Sustainability Career Achievement Award by the Red Campus Sustentable.
