Rodrigo is the Director of Data and Computing at the Office of the Vice President for Digital Intelligence (VRID) at UC and an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Institute for Mathematical and Computational Engineering and the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the School of Engineering. After leading and consolidating the UC Data Science Initiative, he now heads the institutional strategy for technological infrastructure and digital intelligence. Additionally, he serves as an Advisory Board Member of the Columbia Global Center Santiago and as a Board Member of the Chilean Institute of Operations Research (ICHIO).
His research focuses on the formulation of optimization models under uncertainty and their transfer to large scale complex systems. To achieve this, he combines predictive and prescriptive analytics tools, machine learning, and stochastic optimization to develop robust decision support algorithms. His applied work generates a high impact in industry and public policy, highlighting the development of technological solutions for frontier astronomical observatories (ALMA, Paranal), strategic planning in the airline sector, and the management of waiting lists in the public healthcare system.
Prior to joining UC, he was an Associate Professor and Academic Director of the Master in Industrial Engineering at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering with a diploma in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering Sciences from UC. Subsequently, he earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from Columbia University. In the professional and international arena, he worked as a researcher at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton, New Jersey, developing algorithms for smart grids and energy management, and worked at Booz Allen Hamilton leading operations research projects across the Americas.
