Alejandro Mac Cawley es profesor asociado de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile con un nombramiento conjunto con el Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas en la Escuela de Ingeniería de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y el Departamento de Economía Agrícola de la Facultad de Agronomía y Ciencias Forestales. Es Ingeniero Agrónomo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica, con un grado de Magister en Ciencias de la Ingeniería en la misma casa de estudios. A su vez tiene un Master of Engineering del Georgia Institute of Technology con especialización en logística y es Doctor de la Escuela de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas en el Georgia Institute of Technology, con un campo de especialización es en la ingeniería de la cadena de suministro.

Su investigación se ha enfocado en la optimización de la logística y cadena de suministro en productos perecibles, la planificación de la producción tomando en cuenta la incertidumbre y la optimización de las operaciones hospitalarias con una visión Lean y de Industria 4.0. Es investigador principal en el Centro de Excelencia de la Producción (GEPUC) en donde trabaja con empresas del sector vitivinícola, salud y construcción. Es el presidente del grupo HEAL-ME (Healthcare Association for Lean & Management Excellence) que busca el desarrollo y aplicación de técnicas y prácticas para mejorar los procesos y servicios de salud. El grupo tiene integrantes de Brasil, Argentina, México e India.
