Académico a jornada completa desde 1972. Pionero en el desarrollo de modelos de elección discreta y su aplicación en determinar la disposición al pago por reducir externalidades (accidentes, ruido y contaminación). Con su equipo de investigadores ha desarrollado metodologías aplicadas en Alemania, Australia, España y Noruega. Miembro fundador del Instituto Sistemas Complejos de Ingeniería, del equipo PUC que lidera el Centro de Excelencia BRT+-Across Latitudes and Cultures, con MIT, Sydney University y World Resources Institute, y del Centro de Desarrollo Urbano Sustentable (CEDEUS).
Ha publicado diez libros y más de 200 artículos en revistas internacionales y capítulos de libros. Destaca Modelling Transport (Wiley) con más de 18.000 copias vendidas, que refleja el estado de la práctica y es texto base en la mayoría de los programas de postgrado en transporte. También es co-autor de juego de simulación Micro-GUTS, utilizado en más de 50 universidades. Fue Co-editor in Chief de Transportation Research, part A (2012-2020), y es miembro del comité editorial de las revistas Transport Policy, International Planning Studies, Transportation Letters, Research in Transport Economics, Travel Behaviour and Society y Multimodal Transportation.
Ha dirigido importantes estudios de transporte en América Latina y Europa, involucrando la aplicación de técnicas avanzadas de modelación de demanda. En particular, lideró el análisis de la demanda por concesiones viales interurbanas utilizando encuestas de preferencias y modelos flexibles de elección discreta. También ha dirigido los trabajos de diseño e implementación de las encuestas origen-destino (EOD) más avanzadas de la región, como la EOD de 1991 (33.000 hogares) y la EOD continua que comenzó con 15.000 hogares el 2001-2002 y entrevistó otros 5.000 por año entre 2004 y 2007 en Santiago, y la EOD del 2011 en Bogotá, a más de 15.000 hogares.
