Profile
Santiago Tassara is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. His research focuses on petrology and economic geology, using the mineralogy and geochemistry of rocks to understand how magmas evolve and form economically important mineral deposits, particularly magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits in subduction zones. He is also interested in carbon capture and the in-situ utilization of geological resources on the Moon and other planetary bodies to support future exploration and habitability.
Prior to joining UC, Santiago was the Bateman Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University. He holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from Universidad de Chile, recognized with the Best Doctoral Thesis in Physical and Mathematical Sciences Award from the Chilean Academy of Sciences in 2022, an MSc in Mineral Resources from Universitat de Barcelona, and an undergraduate degree in Geology from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina. He is also a recipient of the 2026 Waldemar Lindgren Award from the Society of Economic Geologists, recognizing outstanding contributions to research in economic geology.
